Google Tag Manager (GTM)

A free Google tool for deploying and managing tracking tags on a website through one interface, without editing the site's code each time.

Definition

Google Tag Manager is a free tag-management system that lets you add, change, and organize tracking tags — like analytics and ad conversion snippets — from a single dashboard. Instead of pasting code into your site for every new tool, you install GTM once and manage everything through it.

In depth

Google Tag Manager is the control panel that sits between your website and the tools that watch what happens on it. You install one container snippet on the site, and from then on you add tags — a Google Analytics 4 tag, a Google Ads conversion, a Meta Pixel — through the interface. Triggers tell each tag when to fire (a form submit, a button click, a phone-number tap), so you decide what counts as a conversion without touching the site's code.

For a contractor's marketing, this is the difference between tracking that gets built once and forgotten and tracking that actually keeps up. Every campaign decision — which ads to scale, which keywords to cut — depends on conversion tracking being measured correctly. The right setup lets that measurement get fixed, expanded, and tested fast, so you're not waiting on a developer every time you want to track a new quote form or a new call button.

The common mistake is 'set it and forget it,' or letting the container pile up with old, half-working tags nobody audits, often firing off a brittle page element instead of a clean data layer. A messy container quietly double-counts conversions or stops firing after a site change, and the numbers you're making budget decisions on go wrong. WellBuilt builds each client's container cleanly, names tags so they're maintainable, and tests every trigger in preview mode before it goes live — so the data your spend rides on is trustworthy.

Worked example

Example

After a remodeler's new website launches, WellBuilt adds tracking for the new estimate form and click-to-call button entirely inside GTM — live the same day, with no developer ticket.
