Definition

A topic cluster is a way of organizing content around a central theme: a comprehensive pillar page covers the broad topic, and a set of cluster pages each dig into a specific subtopic, all linked together. This structure signals depth and authority to search engines on a subject. It's a more durable approach than publishing one-off articles in isolation.

The model has three parts: a pillar page targeting a broad, high-value term; cluster pages targeting narrower, more specific queries; and internal links connecting the clusters to the pillar and back. This interlinking tells Google you cover the topic thoroughly, which helps the whole group rank rather than leaving each page to fight alone. It also gives visitors a clear path from a broad question to the specific answer they need.

For a residential contractor, topic clusters turn scattered blog posts into a system that builds compounding authority. A pillar on 'kitchen remodeling' might link to clusters on layouts, costs, timelines, and cabinet options, each capturing its own searches while reinforcing the pillar. Over time, this depth makes it much harder for a competitor with a single thin page to outrank you.

The mistake is creating clusters that overlap so heavily they compete with each other, a problem called keyword cannibalization, or building a pillar with no real depth behind it.
